Amsterdam, the "City of Tulips" is particularly well-known for its three rings of canals, along which thousands of elaborately decorated merchants' residences and warehouses were built in the 17th century, the Dutch 'Golden Age'. When the network of canals was dug, 90 islands were created, which are connected to one another by hundreds of bridges.
In the center of one of the main squares in Amsterdam, known as the "Dam", is the Koninklijk Palace. This national landmark is a palace belonging to the Dutch royal family, although it is mainly used for state occasions.
